“Tendency?” Let me tell you about my first psychiatric hospitalization, at the age of 23. I was locked in a “Quiet Room”, Instead of a bed, there was a wooden platform instead of a bed. The “mattress” was thick vinyl sewn into the bed, and no sheets so I could not try and hang myself. There were four leather straps with padded buckles, to immobilize each limb, attached to the wooden platform. The inside windows were reinforced with embedded “chicken wire”, outside windows were thick. Across from the bed, there was a slab of polished steel on the wall, which was like a mirror, but it was angled so that people on the other side of the interior windows could get a good look onto the bed. Someone came to “check” me, it seemed like every 15 minutes. When I requested to go to the bathroom, there was a steel toilet bowl with no toilet seat. When it flushed, the water flushed away completely. They said I might try to hurt myself with a hinged toilet seat, or drown myself if there was water in the toilet. In “bed” I started chewing off the stitches on my wrists, regretting I let myself get stitched up in the ER. They sent someone (nurse?) to watch me overnight so I wouldn’t continue. She was instructed not to engage me in conversation.
