 I was Ill-prepared for the toxicity that I encountered in adult interpersonal relationships. The Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family had me completely unprepared for the realities I encountered. We grow up believing that we will meet our soulmate and live a happy, healthy life with shared intimacy helping us maximize our human potential. And what if that does not happen. Is there a plan B? I have a serious mental illness and I am not ashamed to admit that. At 52 years of age and one deceased husband, I am NEVER doing that again. I am mortal and will never, in my lifespan, untangle the perplexities inherent in those relationships with a semblance of understanding or insight. I know enough to know, I know nothing. So what. I have a good life, a one-bedroom apartment with two rescue cats and I have done such a good job at my own well being and developing an enhanced quality of life for myself, that I now do it professionally. I thrive on intimacy and closeness and I enjoy it working with my population of seriously mentally ill folks as a peer supporter. Just landed the 10-year mark on my employment. I found a place to belong and it has nothing to do with a romantic partner. Actually, my own potential was not even realized or noticed until my husband died. If he was still alive, my loyal dumbass would still be failing daily at trying to make another happy without recognizing that was not my job, it was his. Bless his soul, but I'm glad to be me finally.
