Ask them to pay attention to the soft feel of the grass on their legs and fingers.

If they are interested in the grass show them how to stay very still and quiet and watch what is living in the grass. If you are still for a couple of minutes you will start to notice creatures such as ants, beetles, ladybirds, millipedes, slaters, snails or mushrooms growing in the grass, etc. If you have a magnifying glass you can use that to examine the organisms you find more closely.

If you have some mud, you can ask them to wear gumboots and stomp in the mud. You can also show them how to make mud pies! They will love getting messy with an adult.
